I am trying to work out the number of grids.
Can anyone direct me to a program which will give me the answer for a given partially completed grid.

There could be more than one answer for a partial grid. It takes careful placement of the clues to make sure the solution is unique.
Rublips' solver will always find a solution if you allow it to guess. It's at http://act365.com/sudoku/
