One technique I likes is:
Count the occurrances of each number on the 9x9 board, the larger the occurrance, the more hints on the board.
And thus the easier to solve.
For instance, if 8 ones are on the board, the last one should be easy to figure out.

While that is certainly true when at least one digit has 8 occurrences, and it is often true in more general situations (especially on simpler puzzles), it is not true in general.
