Sudoku Players' Forum (clone)

I am trying to understand X cycles. Can someone point me to a simple description of X cycles (dos and don'ts) that a non-expert can understand? I get the basics of how they work but just when I think I understand it, I see an example that does not fit with my thinking. Thanks for the help.
